Welcome to... The Sandbox

In October 2006, Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau launched a military blog (or "milblog") that soon became a vast online forum through which hundreds of service members in Afghanistan and Iraq began to share stories with readers here at home. Many of the most eloquent and compelling posts from this blog have been compiled to form a brilliant and emotionally charged book called The Sandbox: Dispatches From Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $16.95).

When Trudeau, a long-time advocate for our country's service men and women, initiated the blog, he was amazed at the number of writers and journalists in the field who so vividly captured and relayed the reality of war. This collection of stories is nonpartisan, devoid of politicking and propaganda, allowing readers a true-to-life glimpse at the effects of war on those deployed as well as those anxiously awaiting their return, with posts from both perspectives.

At turns tragic, funny, exhilarating, suspenseful, anguished, and full of hope, The Sandbox chronicles the day-to-day struggles of those truly fighting this war, helping those of us at home understand the sacrifices they make on our behalf.

All author proceeds go to Fisher House, a "home away from home" for the families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers.
