Collecting more than 42 weeks of Jim Toomey's Sherman's Lagoon, Sharks Just Wanna Have Fun (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $12.99) transports readers to an imaginary lagoon near the South Pacific island of Kapupu, where a cast of coral reef critters lives a charmed aquatic lifestyle.
Sherman's Lagoon occasionally comments on timely maritime issues, such as rising sea levels, degrading water quality, and environmental pollution. Mostly, though, Sherman and his pals concern themselves with their own schemes. Throughout Sharks Just Wanna Have Fun, Sherman does what he can to satisfy his insatiable appetite. The bumbling tortoise, Fillmore, unsuccessfully searches for a mate, and the hermit crab, Hawthorne, looks for new ways to swindle money out of his friends. In one story line, Sherman's fish friend, Ernest, even transforms himself and Sherman into humans so they can take a much-needed trip to Las Vegas!
Dive into Sherman's Lagoon and see why it boasts a syndication list of more than 200 daily newspapers on five continents. But beware! Sherman is known for occasionally scarfing down a “hairless beach ape” (human) or two.
Jim Toomey was born and raised in Alexandria, Va. Following family tradition, he studied mechanical engineering at Duke University, but he left that career to become a political cartoonist. Jim launched Sherman's Lagoon in 1991 and the strip was picked up by Creators Syndicate later that year. A philosopher, surfer, scuba diver, and sailor, Jim lives in Maryland with his wife, daughter, and son.
