Meet the Duncans— typical family network consisting of a teenage boy and his baffled parents. Sound familiar? Is it your life...or your favorite comic strip? Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Jim Borgman and Rueben award-winning writer Jerry Scott bring to life 15 year-old Jeremy, his loving—if mystified—parents, and a crazy collage of friends and acquaintances in their new Zits compilation: Crack of Noon: A Zits Treasury (Andrews McMeel Publishing, LLC, $16.95).
Millions of readers worldwide have empathized with this hilarious strip because of the connection they feel to the characters. Zits has sparked interest even outside of the funny pages, as "Zits groups" grow across the country, using the comic to bring parents and their children closer together. The Fayetteville Central United Methodist Church is just one example of this phenomenon, with their Zits schedule offering classes that focus on family life, delving into topics that range from nutrition to juvenile dating to single-parent families.
Zits spans the gap between fantasy and reality better than any other cartoon in comic history. Parents across the country feel like Jeremy mirrors their own adolescent, and many teens agree that their parents are just as clueless as Walt and Connie. Though the barrier between Jeremy and his family is often the central plot of Crack of Noon: A Zits Treasury, Jim Borgman and Jerry Scott have found that setting this common theme to comedy actually helps to bring real-life teens and their parents closer together.
Jim Borgman earned the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and is the four time winner of the National Cartoonist Society's Best Editorial Cartoonist Award. He lives in Cincinnati, where he is the Cincinnati Enquirers editorial cartoonist.
Jerry Scott is the co-creator of the comic strip Baby Blues as well as Nancy. In 2002, Scott won the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, the National Cartoonist Society's highest honor. He resides in Malibu, California.
