It's two thumbs and four paws up for Dog Eat Doug (Andrews McMeel Publishing, LLC, $12.99), a family-friendly and heartwarming cartoon strip that narrates the blossoming relationship between Sophie, the family dog, and Doug, the new baby. Food bowls are left empty and egos are tested when spoiled, "only dog" Sophie suddenly finds herself forced to shared the house and the attention.

As time wears on, Sophie's frustration softens when she sees the sweetness of Doug's innocent, curious nature, and the potential of his opposable thumbs when it comes to the cheese drawer in the fridge. Before long, they've become a lean, mean Sophie-Doug team with free time on their hands and mischief on their minds. Sometimes sarcastic, and always heart meltingly charming, Dog Eat Doug satisfies any reader's sweet tooth without sacrificing classic cartoon tongue-in-cheek witticisms.

Strap in your car seat and hold on tight as the strip navigates the comical chaos that follows the birth of a new baby, aided and abetted by a plethora of supporting characters, including:

  • Emily and Tiger, Doug and Sophie's cousins
  • General, the gruff, been-around-the-block-and-back dog of the neighborhood
  • The elusive Mom and Dad, whose faces are hidden from the reader
  • Assorted sassy woodland animals, including sarcastic rabbits and trickster squirrels

Make no bones about it—cartoonist Brian Anderson's Dog Eat Doug collection is one treat that will leave you howling...with laughter, that is.
