Submission Guidelines

Andrews McMeel Publishing, LLC (AMP), a division of Andrews McMeel Universal, is a leading publisher of cookbooks, gift books, humor books, middle-grade fiction titles, and cartoon collections, publishing as many as 250 new titles annually. AMP is also the premier calendar publisher in the country, annually publishing calendars based on many top-selling properties.

We're always looking for new authors and new book ideas.

Before submitting your manuscript, you should first familiarize yourself with Andrews McMeel Publishing and the types of books we publish. When proposing a book, please consider whether it is a good fit for us. Our company’s core publication categories include: cookbooks, comics & humor, puzzles & games, and illustrated middle-grade.

We are happy to consider submissions from both literary agents and directly from authors. If you are submitting a proposal directly to us, please follow the guidelines below.

How To Submit a Book Proposal to Andrews McMeel Publishing, LLC

As a first step, we recommend that you send (to the address below) a book proposal consisting of:
  • A cover letter describing the work as a whole. Include all information that you think we should have in order to make a decision about your project. In particular, tell us who your target audience is and provide a rationale for why we are the best publisher for your work.
  • An outline of the entire work and an estimate of the length of the prospective manuscript.
  • One or two sample chapters. It is not necessary to send the entire manuscript, just enough material to give us a sense of the work as a whole.
  • A brief bio describing who you are and why you are the right person to write this book.
  • Please be sure that your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address are on the submission. Do not send original art.
  • A self-addressed, stamped envelope of the correct size to contain your work with sufficient postage for the return of all of your material. Without this, we cannot return your materials to you. If you do not need your materials returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for our reply.

How To Submit a Calendar Proposal to Andrews McMeel Publishing, LLC

First, a little about the calendars we publish. Our calendar line is licensed-property intensive, comprising mainly calendars related to best-selling books, popular cartoonists, well-known columnists, well-trafficked Web sites, and highly rated television shows and movies. Calendars that do not have this type of "built-in appeal" often have a difficult time competing with our other calendars at retail and are therefore, often not right for consideration by Andrews McMeel Publishing. With this said, we do consider, and sometimes implement, original ideas we receive through submissions, and are always eager to evaluate new proposals.

If you think your calendar idea would be a good complement to our line, we recommend that you send (to the address below, to the attention of Creative Director, Calendars) a calendar proposal consisting of:

  • A thorough description of your idea, background information, intended audience, and other pertinent information.
  • Include at least 20 sample entries if you're suggesting a day-to-day calendar. For wall or desk calendars, include sample artwork and related text. The more thorough your presentation is, the easier it is for us to evaluate.
  • A self-addressed, stamped envelope of the correct size to contain your work with sufficient postage for the return of all of your material. Without this, we cannot return your materials to you. If you do not need your materials returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for our reply.
  • After we receive your submission, we will review it and distribute it to our editorial staff. This process can take from four to six weeks. We will then contact you as to our interest in your idea. At this date, the first calendar line we could consider your proposal for is 2016.

Keep In Mind

Please do not send originals of anything. Items are often damaged in the mail and during distribution in our office. For this very reason, we cannot be held liable for any original artwork or manuscript submissions you send to us. If we are interested in your work, we will request originals at that time.

In receiving a submission, we do not assume any duty not to publish a book based on a similar idea, concept, or story.

Please allow at least 90 days to receive a response. We get many submissions a day, and we may not get to yours immediately.

Thank you for your interest in Andrews McMeel Publishing. We look forward to reading your proposal soon.
