KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 17, 2019)—Andrews McMeel Universal (AMU) board of directors Chairman Hugh T. Andrews announces Martha Nelson will join its board effective May 6, 2019. Nelson’s career spans more than three decades as an editor, brand innovator and media executive, including senior vice president and global editor-in-chief at Yahoo and editor-in-chief of Time, Inc., the first woman in the company’s history to hold the title.

“Martha Nelson’s exceptional range of experience in media is an outstanding fit for our board,” said Andrews. “In addition, her aptitude for forward-thinking strategy, formidable leadership skills, and editorial engagement with relevant content immersed in popular culture positions her to be a valuable member of our board. We are delighted to welcome her.”

“I have admired Andrews McMeel from the outside and now am honored to join its board,” said Nelson. “I’m excited to join this independent and creative company as it charts a path in our quickly evolving media landscape. I look forward to learning from them and contributing to their remarkable work.”

“I have been fortunate to know Martha for more than 20 years, including working with and learning from her as she created InStyle,” said AMU Chief Executive Officer Andy Sareyan. “She’s one of the smartest, savviest, most creative people I’ve ever known, and I’m thrilled to have her join the AMU board.”

Notable achievements at Yahoo include her oversight of the news, sports, finance, and lifestyle editorial teams, as well as their award-winning video production and social media initiatives. At Time, Inc., she was responsible for overseeing the editorial content and talent for brands ranging from Time and People to Money and Sports Illustrated. Highlights of her career at Time, Inc. include the launch of Who Weekly in Australia, founding editor of InStyle, nurturing the publication through a period of explosive growth and establishing it as a leading brand, and editor-in-chief at People, the most profitable magazine in the world. She is credited with reinvigorating People, and guiding the relaunch and growth of People.com to become the No.1 entertainment website. She was also a fellow at the Advanced Leadership Initiative at Harvard University in 2018.

In addition, Nelson has been honored many times for her achievements and philanthropic efforts, and has served on the boards of several professional and charitable organizations. She is currently on the advisory boards of the Glass House and the Actors Fund and serves as a trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, where she chairs the development committee.
