
Sentenced to twelve years on Robben Island in 1964, Mac Maharaj has played a key role in the anti-apartheid struggle both inside and outside South Africa. On his release from prison he escaped into exile and was appointed to maintain the underground ANC within South Africa. In 1988 he returned in secret as the overall commander of Operation Vula and was arrested, despite having been granted immunity, in 1990. After his release in 1991 he became joint secretary of the negotiating process. He was appointed minister of transport in the first democratic government and retired from Parliament in 1999. He is a member of the board of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

As a leading member of the ANC and a dedicated political activist, Ahmed Kathrada was among the accused in both the Treason Trial and the Rivonia Trial, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent eighteen years on Robben Island before moving, with Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu among others, to Pollsmoor Prison for a another seven years. He was released in 1989 and elected an MP in the first democratic government, serving as parliamentary counselor in the office of the president. In 1997 he was elected chair of the Robben Island Council. He is also a member of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Executive Committee.
