Characters In Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara

Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara

Arthur Denison

Arthur Denison

It has been seven years since Arthur Denison's shipwreck on Dinotopia with his son, Will. Denison, a scientist and inventor originally from Boston, has made several expeditions through Dinotopia and the caverns of the World Beneath, which were described in his earlier journal. Currently settled in Waterfall City, he receives a personal invitation from the emperor of Chandara, who has heard of his exploits and inventions and would like for him to be a special guest at the palace court.

Will Denison

Will Denison

Will Denison, born in 1850, adapted quickly to living on an island with sentient dinosaurs. He was struck by his first sight of a skybax and underwent the challenging training in Treetown and Canyon City to become a skybax rider. Although ridiculed at first for being a "dolphinback," or a newcomer to the island, Will has become an expert flier. In 1869, he and his friend Sylvia have volunteered to be among a select group of skybax riders to go to Ebulon to learn the medieval art of air jousting.

Bix

Bix

Bix is a Protoceratops ambassador and translator who speaks seventeen languages and is an expert mimic of sounds. She is a trusted companion of Arthur's, meeting him soon after he was shipwrecked and accompanying him on his 1867 Expedition to the World Beneath. She travels with Arthur on the Chandaran Expedition, drawing on the resources of her experience growing up just across the desert in Canyon City.

Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara

Hugo Khan

Hugo Khan is the elusive and mysterious emperor of Chandara. Since he is not often seen in public, his citizens don't always agree on what form he takes—human or dinosaur—and there are many legends about him. He surrounds himself with resident ministers of art: dancers, poets, calligraphers, and musicians, and invites ordinary citizens or even foreigners to be in his company if he has heard of their wisdom or artistry. He often leaves the palace at night to tour the city and respond to the needs of the citizens.

Lee Crabb

Lee Crabb

Lee Crabb is Dinotopia's notorious malcontent. He is well-known across the island for his tall hat with its band decorated with shells and teeth; his smelly cigars, rude manners; and most of all his greedy, suspicious, and uncooperative attitude. Cast up on Dinotopia's shores in 1853, he has not accepted Dinotopia's ways, and has had various jobs hauling ingots and dinosaur dung. He has tried to manufacture gunpowder and has made various attempts to find Dinotopia's hidden treasures. He hears of Arthur receiving the special invitation to Chandara and is the prime suspect when the invitation goes missing at Sauropolis.

Cornelius Mazurka

Cornelius Mazurka

Cornelius Mazurka once conducted a "seventy-five-piece consort of brassmen and hadros" in Ruhmsburg. He lives in a partially collapsed tower of the ruined bridge over the Jubila River. He remained among the ruins living a hermit's existence, along with his dinosaur Henriette, after most citizens fled from the city. He maintains a collection of antique instruments, though no one plays them but himself. Arthur and Bix convince him to pack up his instrument collection and leave the city so he can start again.

Goldsworthy Marlinspike

Goldsworthy Marlinspike

Goldsworthy Marlinspike is a descendent of Elias Marlinspike, the founder of Bilgewater. He is a "celestial navigator," with both astronomical and nautical instruments in his cabin. He hopes to guide the three "star galleons" of Bilgewater, together with their human and saurian crew, to the "buckle on the belt of Orion."

Esther Volant

Esther Volant is the master storyteller in Thermala. This white-haired woman wears magnificent damask robes embroidered with gold dragons emerging from the sea. She believes entirely in the existence of angels, centaurs, and mermaids. She was born and raised in Thermala, never married or bore children, and has been only once down the mountain, when she was seventeen. She prepares her epic puppet shows for all the children and cubs, aided by little figures of bread dough, which she bakes fresh each morning and gives to them to eat when the stories are over. Unfortunately, she refused to allow Arthur to paint her portrait.

Martha Taylor

Martha Taylor is a spunky girl in pigtails from Jorotongo. She meets up with Arthur, Bix, and Cornelius when they arrive. Along with her brother Sander and their dinosaur friend Keebo, she tries out all her faces on Arthur early one morning before the "funny-face contest" on Festival Day.

Nibor Dooh

Nibor Dooh is a bandit from the Kleptodon clan on the eastern foothills of the Forbidden Mountains. In his tribe, "it is the law of hospitality to give everything to one's neighbor." By this pretext, he makes the sport of taking everything (including clothes) from a person that he meets one day, and bestowing on that same luckless fellow all the goods taken from the person he met the day before. He takes nothing for himself. He resents being called a thief, pointing out that more often, his action is that of a benefactor, allowing one person to literally walk in another's shoes.

Muhimmi

Muhimmi is an Paraceratherium, a form of giant rhino brontothere, which was the largest land mammal ever known to live on Earth, more than four times the weight of the largest elephant. However, among these gigantic creatures, she is the smallest and the most timid in her caravan on the run to Kangduk. She eats with dainty precision, curling back her large upper lip, and moans softly at the prospect of uncertain footing. Often, she requires the assurances of the mahout or even the help of the Megaloceras or "Irish Elk" to assist her across difficult sections of trail.

Beeber

Beeber is a Macrauchenia, a strange mammal. Based on fossil evidence it seems like a cross between a camel and an elephant. It assists Esther Volant in her bread-dough puppet performances.

Cirrus

Cirrus is a Quetzalcoatlus, Will Denison's flying partner. Cirrus and Will met and bonded during Will's training at Canyon City, and are now close companions. They learn to fish from the air in the lake at Ebulon.

Augustus Plinth

Augustus Plinth is Arthur and Bix's guide in Sauropolis.

Tarjik

Tarjik, Arthur and Bix's guide in Chandara, finds them in the Marketplace of Ideas.

Ilya Shinshik

Ilya Shinshik, a turnip farmer in Teleost, befriends our heroes and brings them into Chandara, giving them sixteen turnips to help with their expenses.
