Baby Love: An Affectionate Miscellany

Introduction by Rachael Hale

Baby Love: An Affectionate Miscellany

As a long-time photographer of animals, photographing babies is a new and exciting direction for me. Ironic really, considering the oft-repeated advice: "Never photograph animals or children." People often ask which subject is easier—animals or babies? The truth is they are both just as complex, time-consuming, and incredibly rewarding. Although I've had to adapt my approach somewhat, my repertoire of noises to attract and distract puppies seems to work just as well with babies!

All my baby subjects have been such little characters—babies provide endless hours of entertainment and I find their giggling and cackling utterly contagious. Happily, babies seem to respond well to my face and manner so we make a good working team.

To make sure the babies do have the right temperament to be photographed, each one goes through an "audition" process. On the following pages are some of the lovely spontaneous shots that were captured on these audition days. The range of expressions reminds me of the children's poem Monday's Child. I hope the babies in this book bring you as much joy as they have me.
