We cut our white bread into doorstep slices. Our mother toasted it and we patted butter as straight as we could with the flat-sided knives we were allowed to use, before the toast just drank it all up, it seemed. Then we sat on the real doorstep, munching, staring at the cherry pinks and plum purples, the lemon blossom, the sky blue, and whipped cream white of the clouds.
